TRAINING: CAREERS INFORMATION
Educational
Requirements
In
the past many people obtained their knowledge through experience
alone. Today there is some debate within the library and
information sector as to whether professionals should be
qualified or not. It is a difficult question to advise on
and people may be better erring on the side of caution and
getting qualified.
In
this case a BA/BSc or MA/MSc should be the qualifications
of choice as these are recognised as professional; Diploma
courses may cover many of the important skills, as will
City & Guilds and SVQs, but these courses are not professionally
recognised.
Those considering moving careers from another sector may
find that their experience and transferable skills are sufficient
to land them a job within the industry.
Positions
involving manipulation of computerised information may require
a qualification in computer science. Indexing or database
production may require relevant qualifications to that area.
Enrolment
on a degree or diploma course will be subject to the entry
requirements of the individual institution. Generally they
will call for a good general education to at least GCSE
or better to A-Level. IT skills (or even a basic qualification)
are becoming a must.
