This intensive one-day course introduces the European Union - its institutions, legislative acts and how policy is made, and how to find out about its activities. The practical information implications of "better regulation" and the ways in which EU law is transposed and implemented in the UK are examined.

Course highlights:

  • Introduction to the European Union
  • Searching for EU information
  • Legislative and judicial information sources
  • Policy monitoring
  • Keeping up-to-date: EU and non-EU sources

Delegates are encouraged to bring laptops to allow for personal examination of some of the sources discussed during the day. The latest developments in this fast-moving area will be highlighted, including the use of social media, digitisation projects and transparency activities.

On completing the course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a greater knowledge of major sources of official and other European Union information
  • Identify sources of information to solve complex EU enquiries
  • Give an overview of the major EU institutions and the range of online sources available from these
  • Give an independent evaluation of online sources of EU information
  • Identify a range of specialist online sources for use in handling more complex enquiries
